Skis and snowboards are always best in a case like this. For car transport, a soft, thin shell is enough to hold a pair of skis or a board: it’s strong enough and space-saving. If you’re flying, you’ll need a thick case. It takes up more space but also protects the best.

The main rule for transporting skis in a car: they must be on the edge. If you wear the straps, the position will be unstable and the skis will start bumping against each other. It is also necessary to secure the skis with special clips, also known as Velcro or clips so that they do not move and the edges do not scratch the skis.

The snowboard should be on the skateboard-this is the most stable position.

Where to put

On the roof rack, we use a typical trunk, placed on the roof rails. For example, in the Thule WingBar Edge model, two torso arches accommodate four to six pairs of skis and three to four snowboards.

Cons of such transportation:

There is an increase in fuel consumption by about 20–30% due to increased air resistance;
you need to spend some time fastening the covers to the trunk with straps, and there is every chance of getting dirty on the car in the process.

In the ski trunk, it is convenient to quickly store and protect inventory. The downside is that you can’t carry anything on it. Sports equipment is also shipped uncovered, and mud and reagents can be brought in from the road.

In some models, the trunk bracket is opened with a key, and the cell is closed with a curtain. In the worst case, keys are lost, curtains are broken, and locks are frozen. WD-40 or a special lock defroster can be useful. And even better—silicone grease for preventative locks.

In the suitcase pencil case, Ideal for transporting sports equipment on the roof: you can carry a lot of things, fast fix and won’t get dirty. That’s right, it gets dirty easily, and it’s hard to put the pencil case in the suitcase—best done with two people.

The pencil case must match the length of the skis and snowboards (+5–10 cm). An example is a Thule box with a volume of 500 litres and a design weight of 75 kg. It can be quickly mounted on the trunk and can hold 7 pairs of skis up to 2 meters or 5 snowboards.

Some cases have ski bindings. They’re not necessary – it’s enough to attach the skis with a Velcro paper clip so they don’t hang out.

Ski boots and snowboard boots are best kept out of the trunk but in the cabin. So they’ll arrive warm, and it’ll be nice to put them on and go for a ride right away. Some chests already have space for boots and helmets.

HELPFUL HINTS

  • To make no mistakes and waste no money, you first need to weigh the pros and cons of buying a ski roof rack and determine the type of construction and type of fastening. It’s better to take the best ski racks for car with you to “try it on” during the buying process.
  • This kind of investment can raise a lot of questions, so start by evaluating the price range of the product, familiarizing yourself with the key features, and finding the best value for money. Often, cheap trunk models are unreliable, and expensive trunk models become a lure for intruders.

  • You need to buy a roof rack that will last a long time, which is impossible if you buy a simple model with a small cargo capacity and want to spend the holidays with a large group. The same applies to solo travellers who don’t need to buy expensive boxes when travelling alone.
